If you really want to make your own hanging day bed, this is the right article to read. This condition easily fits double size mattresses that can definitely be useful for a family as big as yours. Before we go any further, let’s first list the materials you need to make this amazing invention.

Required materials

  • Two times four studs – at least 17 pieces
  • 100 pieces of 3 inch wood screws
  • 50 inches of rope or chains that can hold at least 200 pounds
  • At least four eye bolts. You would need more if you also wanted to use it on the ceiling.

If you want, you can also get some finishing accessories, e.g. B. a drill with countersink and bits that fit the bolts and screws. You also need a saw to cut the boards.

Apart from that, you will need some additional tools such as pencils, tape measure, some carpentry tools, protective equipment and Kreg stencil. The next step is to write down the dimensions you should use for the frame of the bed. Here they are as follows:

  • Frame sides: Two 2 × 4 at 82 ¾ inches
  • Frame beams: Six 2 × 4 at 42 ½ inches
  • Deck Boards: Twelve 2 × 4 at 84 ¾ inches


Now that you know the materials you should be using, we can now proceed with the steps you should take to make the hanging beds.

You should first cut your boards with the dimensions given above. Make sure there is a 1½ inch gap between your bolts. You can then drill two holes with a countersink. Then use the 3 inch screws to secure the bolts to the frame edges.

You should apply some glue to the top of the frame. Then place the cover boards on the frame. You should properly set that the deck boards and overhead are at least 1 inch from all sides. (See the illustration above for details.) The boards should be about 1 cm apart. After spacing them, you should be able to screw them in properly. Use two screws per deck board and beam.

The next step you should do is drilling a hole with a perfectly sized drill bit reserved for the largest screws on the corners of the day bed. The first hole must be drilled in the frame of the bed. Use some glue on the pilot hole and fix the larger screws in the bedpost to secure the position.

You should avoid over-tightening or peeling off the wooden posts as this significantly weakens the joints.

After that, you should find the rafters or some beams to hang up the day bed. You should attach some screws directly to a beam or rafter. You can use the ropes and chains to hang the bed as high as you want.

You should hang the bed 18 inches off the floor. This is the standard bench height. Now it’s ready for your matches and bedding. Just make sure that your rafters, roofs and beams are all in accordance with the code. The use of this type of bed can definitely pose some dangers to the user. So you have to make sure everything is safe first.

Completion and preparation

After finishing the bed you should fill the exposed holes with wooden spatula. You should also grind the entire device. If necessary, you should fill some holes with a wooden spatula. Use medium grit sandpaper first, followed by fine sandpaper. After that, you should vacuum the day bed to remove dust and sand. Don’t forget to apply a protective finish. Let the device dry for a few hours before hanging and using it.
